A ceramic skin applied as a ventilated facade successfully addresses the rehabilitation and expansion of the hospital’s new outpatient building. The final result is that it appears as the same operation and becomes the new image of the Children’s Hospital of Sant Joan de Déu in the 21st century.
The smaller-width ceramic piece chosen for the facade can be used as a cladding and also as a panel with various widths and measurements. It ensures proper solar protection, cooling the building by 5 and 6 degrees.
The dark colour chosen for the outpatient building renders it a cornerstone-style building in contrast with the impressive red brick structure, the image of the old hospital built in the 70s.
The two “flower pots” of the old hospital building thus become a single structure, the image of the 21st-century Children’s Hospital of Sant Joan de Déu.
